The Armenian signed for United in a £30m deal from Dortmund in 2016 and overcame early struggles under Jose Mourinho to make himself a starter by the time the Red Devils reached the Stockholm final.
United finished outside the top four and needed to beat Ajax in order to gain a place in the Champions League, with big money transfers for Romelu Lukaku and potentially Antoine Griezmann resting on the result.
It turned out to be one of Mourinho’s finest nights at the club as goals from Paul Pogba and Mkhitaryan ensured the Portuguese boss finished the season with two trophies under his belt, as well as Champions League qualification.
